Activists who are against casinos laid their eyes recently on Massachusetts’ planned first licensed casino site, Springfield, in an attempt to garner support for the ballot question in November to cancel the casino law of the state. “Repeal the Casino Deal” organizers chose this city for their meetings with the volunteers after the highest court of the state did not give them the chance to question the law to be placed in the ballot. According to them, Springfield is going to be their battlefield after it was proposed to be the venue for the MGM resort project worth $800 million. They have repealed even the best online casinos in the past and there may be luck in this latest conquest of theirs.
In July, MGM won over their spectators and gained a vote for approval with their Springfield Casino. It was then followed with the awarding by the gambling regulators of the state as their very first license for the casino in the past month and the recognition for having some of the best casinos may be next. On the other hand, the anti-casino group will establish headquarters for the campaign in the East of Boston and also a regional office located in Springfield to strengthen their campaign. Voters in East Boston did not accept the casino planned to be built in Suffolk Downs horse racing track and the most vocal opponents of the casinos opening in Massachusetts are its residents.
To combat the activists, Gambling companies have also established a political campaign to defeat the questioning of the casinos though they refused to elaborate about it on Wednesday. The organization papers were officially filed by the “Committee to Preserve Jobs Associated with Casino Gambling Law” in the state in the previous week though no solicitations and receiving of donations were made yet. The entities that will finance the group are composed of the Mohegan Sun, Penn National Gaming and MGM. Carole Brennan, spokeswoman of MGM, said that the casino giant based in Las Vegas is just getting started at moving along with the proposal once the question to cancel the project is trashed.
